Thetoenailis a hard, thin plate that sits on top of each toe.
It protects the tip of your toe from bumps and scratches when you walk or run.
A toenail grows from a small area at its base, called the nail root, which is just under the skin.
Most healthy toenails look pink because of the blood under the nail.
If you cut your toenails too short or by accident, it may hurt or make the toe red and sore.
Some people can get problems like ingrown toenails, where the side of the nail grows into the skin and feels painful.
